The Israeli authorities are reportedly preparing to deport around 7,000 Sri Lankans in Israel on charges of overstaying their visas, violating visa conditions and engaging in jobs outside their approved job categories.

However, the Sri Lankan government has already initiated diplomatic discussions with the Israeli authorities to find a solution for these people to remain in the country without losing their jobs, said Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath.

The Minister said this in response to a question raised in the House by Member of Parliament Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, adding that currently, nearly 30,000 Sri Lankans are employed in Israel.
