The death toll from the sudden floods in Nepal has exceeded 400, foreign media reports say. The floods occurred in Nepal last Wednesday following a glacial outburst.
Nepal Police said they have been unable to find information about nearly 1,400 people. A significant number of them are believed to be trapped in different areas because roads have been blocked.
It has also been reported that accurate information about the missing people cannot be obtained because communication services have been disrupted.
By Thursday night, around 90 American citizens and 40 Australians were among those reported missing, according to diplomatic sources from the two countries.
Nepalese sources said most of these American and Australian tourists were on pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet, a sacred place for Hindus, Buddhists and others, when the disaster occurred.
However, foreign media reports say the dangerous situation has not completely ended. Nepal and China have warned of the risk of further floods in the Himalayan region. Two lakes on either side of the border between the two countries are still at dangerously high levels following the sudden flooding. Reports say that if the lake barriers or dams break, it could create another serious threat.
