The government has decided to establish a new prison in the old Bogambara prison premises. The relevant gazette notification has been issued with the signature of the Minister of Justice and National Integration, Harshana Nanayakkara.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Justice issued a gazette notification on the day before yesterday (07) to establish another new prison. Sources connected to the Ministry of Justice say that the prison is to be constructed on a temporary basis in a part of the Mahamodara Hospital in Galle that is not currently in use.
These two gazette notifications have been issued in accordance with the powers vested in the Minister for the functions of the Prisons Ordinance under Section 2 (Chapter 54) of the Prisons Ordinance.
